Compassion and care are being stripped away': a Just Stop Oil activist on her time in prison
Briefly

Louise Lancaster, after being sentenced for peaceful protest, wrote about her experiences in prison. She noted a shift in her emotional state as she anticipated a transfer to an open prison. Open prisons, aimed at reintegration, are inaccessible for troubled inmates who struggle with behavioral rules due to mental health issues. Lancaster shared personal frustrations, particularly regarding her daughter’s birthday and her longing to connect. She also described the daunting nature of her appeal hearing, marked by extensive legal documentation and the complexity of their case.
At the start of the year, I turned a corner and encountered a new emotional landscape. Transfer to open prison and the sentence appeal were on the horizon.
Prison is no fit place for Tina. She regularly finds herself punished for distress with downgraded conditions, locked in her cell for days without TV, phone or association.
Today is her birthday. It is also the day Cressie, Lucia and I are assembled in HMP Send's video room for our appeal hearing.
The legal arguments went on for two days and we strained to navigate the complexities of the case amidst the weight of the tomes of court papers.
