Australia sues Microsoft for misleading M365 users
"to maintain their subscription they must accept the integration of Copilot and pay higher prices for their plan, or, alternatively, cancel their subscription."
"The ACCC alleges this information provided to subscribers was false or misleading because there was an undisclosed third option, the Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic plans, which allowed subscribers to retain the features of their existing plan, without Copilot, at the previous lower price."
"Following a detailed investigation, we will allege in Court that Microsoft deliberately omitted reference to the Classic plans in its communications and concealed their existence until after subscribers initiated the cancellation process to increase the number of consumers on more expensive Copilot-integrated plans,"
"We're concerned that Microsoft's communications denied its customers the opportunity to make informed decisions about their subscription options, which included the possibility of retaining all the features of their existing plan without Copilot and at the lower price,"
Australia's Competition & Consumer Commission commenced legal proceedings against Microsoft alleging misleading conduct around Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans. The ACCC says Microsoft advised subscribers they must accept Copilot integration and pay higher prices or cancel, while failing to disclose a third option. The undisclosed option, Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Classic plans, reportedly allowed users to keep existing features without Copilot at the prior lower price. The ACCC will allege Microsoft concealed the Classic plans until after cancellations were initiated to increase uptake of more expensive Copilot-integrated plans. Microsoft says consumer trust and transparency are priorities and is reviewing the claim.
