Lawmakers are increasingly substituting their judgment for voter decisions, notably in California where Gov. Gavin Newsom is considering dismantling the independent mapmaking commission established by Proposition 20. This initiative, which passed with a significant majority, was aimed at preventing politicians from manipulating district lines for their benefit. In Missouri, a recent law signed by the Republican governor has overridden a voter-approved minimum wage increase and sick leave requirement. Similar attempts to negate voter initiatives have occurred in Alaska and Nebraska, indicating a trend of legislators resisting voter mandates.
"It's a damning indictment of representative democracy when elected officials are scared of the will of their own voters," said Alexis Magnan-Callaw.
Gov. Gavin Newsom may seek to cancel the independent mapmaking commission established by voters, allowing partisans to redraw congressional lines.
