Humanitarian conditions in Gaza are deteriorating, with caretakers and UNRWA staff experiencing hunger and exhaustion. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed horror at the collapse of vital support systems. The health authorities in Palestine reported a surge in deaths, specifically citing a devastating day where numerous individuals perished while seeking aid. The WHO reported attacks on its staff and facilities, and there were military incursions by Israeli forces in areas believed to be harboring hostages, further escalating humanitarian concerns in the region.
"Caretakers, including UNRWA colleagues in Gaza, are also in need of care now, doctors, nurses, journalists, humanitarians, among them, UNRWA staff are hungry. Many are now fainting due to hunger and exhaustion while performing their duties," UNRWA commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is appalled by an accelerating breakdown of humanitarian conditions in Gaza 'where the last lifelines keeping people alive are collapsing,' his spokesperson said.
'He deplores the growing reports of children and adults suffering from malnutrition,' UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
The Palestinian health authorities said that at least 99 people were killed in what is believed to be the deadliest day yet for families seeking aid since the war began in October 2023 - over 800 in total have been killed just trying to get food.
