Barack Obama said he agrees with Governor Gavin Newsom's approach to altering California's congressional maps and described it as responsible and conditional. Obama said Democrats would not fully maximize changes and would act only if Texas or other Republican states initiate similar mid-decade redistricting maneuvers. Obama noted that political gerrymandering is not his preference but warned that failure to respond would encourage continued Republican efforts and undermine an inclusive, expansive democracy. The Martha's Vineyard fundraiser raised $2 million for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and affiliates. Nancy Pelosi and Eric Holder appeared. Texas lawmakers returned to debate a GOP map creating five potential new GOP seats.
I believe that Gov. Newsom's approach is a responsible approach. He said this is going to be responsible. We're not going to try to completely maximize it,
We're only going to do it if and when Texas and/or other Republican states begin to pull these maneuvers. Otherwise, this doesn't go into effect.
