Congressional Republicans have approved a plan that terminates all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, removing a crucial financial source for PBS, NPR, and numerous local stations. The $1.1 billion budget cut endangers popular programs such as PBS NewsHour and Sesame Street, possibly forcing many stations to reduce services or close. PBS and NPR leaders stress the importance of public media for community support and emergency communication. Stations across various states are already experiencing reductions and cancellations as a consequence of this funding loss.
We're not a network. Our stations are all independent. They're supported by their communities. And our job is to support their work and to give them the resources that they want from us.
We are not a luxury. We are a necessity, especially for those who have no alternatives.
Public media, public radio, public television, are a critical part of the emergency response plans of nearly half of the states in this nation.
We've been there for America's children, for veterans, for the underserved. Now we're asking America not to turn its back on us.
