Frank Bisignano, the Commissioner of Social Security, has committed to an independent audit of the agency's performance data following a meeting with Senator Elizabeth Warren. The SSA recently altered its public reporting of performance metrics, removing crucial data like call wait times. Warren emphasized the necessity of accurate data for oversight, and Bisignano's agreement to the audit aims to increase transparency. The SSA continues to report certain metrics related to customer service, and both parties expressed optimism for improved accountability within the agency.
Commissioner Bisignano agreed with Senator Warren's suggestion to have SSA OIG audit the numbers he provided to the Senator, which were prepared using long-held measurement methodology by the dedicated federal workforce at SSA.
Warren stated, "More accurate data is absolutely essential to oversight," expressing the importance of transparency regarding SSA's performance metrics.
The SSA spokesperson described the meeting as 'productive,' noting that Commissioner Bisignano presented improved customer service metrics that are currently being realized on the phone, in field offices, and online.
Warren emphasized, "I feel like, for the first time in six months, we've really got a foot in the door on getting reliable counts on what's going on within the Social Security Administration."
