Every June, as companies adopt rainbow logos for Pride Month, LGBTQ+ individuals reflect on the disparity between corporate visibility and genuine support. The article explores how a gay designer's experiences inform a more empathetic approach to user experience design. This empathy is not only a design skill but a survival tool shaped by navigating a world often hostile to queer identities. In a climate where LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under threat, the need for such understanding and representation in design becomes critically important.
Good design requires empathy. That's a truism in our industry, but for LGBTQ+ people, and for any of us who have felt 'othered', empathy isn't just a design skill: it's survival.
When I design a form, I think about what it means for someone to not see themselves in the options. This isn't an abstract concern for me. It's a reflection of my lived experience.
