"Our approach to the renovation was to keep the historic section as honest as possible. Basically, to do the minimum to it, to maintain its palette and texture and beauty. Achieving that while making the structure functional required a carefully calibrated expansion."
"Post Company proposed a discreet U-shaped wing-with two bedrooms and three bathrooms-set behind the adobe, something that you couldn't perceive from the street at all. The property's landmark status imposed architectural parameters, and preservation regulations prohibited any alteration to the adobe walls."
Andrew Mariani, founder of Scribe Winery, partnered with Post Company to revitalize a landmarked 1847 adobe, one of Northern California's oldest structures. The single-room building, which once housed the town's mayor, required careful renovation to balance preservation with modern functionality. After four years of work, the project created a flexible space serving both as a hospitality venue for winery events and a guest retreat. The design approach prioritized minimal intervention on the historic adobe while adding a discreet U-shaped wing containing two bedrooms and three bathrooms positioned behind the original structure. Landmark preservation regulations prevented conventional attachment methods, requiring innovative structural solutions to maintain the building's historic integrity and street-facing appearance.
