"There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,"
"The question now is the speed of recovery. That's the challenge."
"Roofs were flying off,"
"We are hoping and praying that the situation will ease so that some attempt can be made to get to those persons."
Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane with 185 mph (295 kph) winds near New Hope, among the strongest Atlantic storms on record. Heavy floodwaters swept across the southwest, winds tore roofs from buildings, boulders tumbled onto roads, and landslides and fallen trees blocked routes. Floodwaters trapped at least three families in Black River while crews could not reach them due to dangerous conditions. Extensive damage inundated the southwestern parish of St. Elizabeth. Nearly 15,000 people sheltered and about 540,000 customers—roughly 77%—lost power. The storm was expected to push a heavy storm surge along northern Jamaica as it moved toward Cuba.
