An explosion and fire tore through a Waldo's discount store in central Hermosillo, Sonora, on Saturday, killing at least 23 people and injuring 11. Forensic medical results indicate most deaths resulted from inhalation of toxic gases. Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed profound sadness, confirmed the casualty numbers, said children were among the victims, and ordered an exhaustive and transparent investigation to determine causes and responsibility. President Claudia Sheinbaum offered condolences and directed support teams to assist victims' families and the injured. Sonora's Red Cross deployed 40 staff and 10 ambulances, making six hospital trips, and city officials said the store was not targeted.
