The US expects Iran to respond on Friday to proposals for an interim deal to end conflict in the Middle East. Fighting has intensified around the contested Strait of Hormuz since an informal truce began, following changes to a US naval mission. US forces fired on and disabled two Iranian-flagged tankers attempting to violate the American blockade of Iran’s ports. Diplomatic efforts continue, including a brief memorandum passed by Pakistan to Iran that the US says could support a more durable ceasefire and enable further talks. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a response is expected and hoped it would lead to serious negotiations. Iran’s foreign minister accused the US of breaching the ceasefire and claimed missile capabilities expanded during the pause in hostilities.
