City makes initial moves for Palm Park makeover with Shelter House restoration - Austin Monitor
Briefly

The Palm Park Shelter House, a 92-year-old structure in Downtown Austin, is set for restoration after the Historic Landmark Commissioners voted for historic zoning. The site, part of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, has been largely unused. The Waterloo Greenway Conservancy plans to integrate the Shelter House into a larger revitalization of Sir Swante Palm Park, which has deteriorated over the years. The renovations aim to create community amenities while honoring the site’s historical significance and its role within the neighborhood's past.
Palm Park is among the first parks in the City of Austin, and the Shelter House is among the first Parks and Recreation structures in the entire city. So it's very exciting that this park will have a shot at a new lease on life after a long period of dormancy.
Historic Landmark Commissioners voted unanimously to initiate historic zoning on the site, laying the groundwork for the renovation project that follows the city's Heritage Grant Program.
The Waterloo Greenway Conservancy aims to resurrect the former recreational structure as part of plans to revitalize Sir Swante Palm Park, which has largely been abandoned.
Once approved by the Planning Commission and Council, the zoning change will clear the way for plans for the renovation project, including amenities like playscapes and community event spaces.
