Designer Jeremiah Brent suggests that traditional rules regarding furniture placement, particularly beds, should be reconsidered. He advocates for placing beds in the middle of a room, creating a more inviting space. This approach allows for distinct areas, such as seating behind the bed. Brent noted that many people have been conditioned to push furniture against walls, but often, central placement can enhance the room's overall aesthetic and functionality.
"Every rule you've been taught is bulls***," Brent said in a Q&A. "The truth is, design is supposed to be personal at its core. That's it. How can you live beautifully? How can you live authentically?"
Brent argues that placing a bed in the middle of a room can be beneficial. "We have been conditioned to think that you need to push everything against the walls to make it feel big and expansive, but sometimes it's the complete opposite."
"I have done this before, where I actually put the bed in the center of the room, which sounds really divisive," he continued. "But by creating an upholstered headboard with the bed in front of it, you've got the bedroom area, you can have, behind it, a seating area where you have the TV..."
