Kew Gardens' Palm House will close for five years for major makeover
Briefly

The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew is undertaking a £50 million renovation of the Palm House, initially constructed in 1848. This extensive project involves relocating 1,300 plants, replacing 16,000 panes of glass, and cleaning hundreds of tonnes of iron. The refurbishment aims to achieve net zero emissions and will result in the glass house being closed for five years starting in 2027. Care is being taken to move the most valuable plants, including a 250-year-old cycad weighing over a tonne. The undertaking involves careful planning over the next two years to ensure plant safety and selection for preservation.
This is the ambitious 50m plan to renovate the world-famous Palm House, which sits at the heart of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.
Kew will also use the refurbishment to reduce emissions from the Palm House to net zero.
It's going to be a long term project, and over the next two years, it's going to be a process of selecting which plants we need to containerize.
The horticulturists will use scaffolds, supports and braces to protect the plant when the time comes for it to be moved.
