We have people using walkers. We have cyclists. And this is a very important area, and we're going to continue to focus on safety in Chinatown.

Last fall, Philadelphia's Center City District (CCD) launched Open Streets: West Walnut on a series of Sundays. One Sunday at a time, the program showed off Center City's innate vibrancy when it catered to people and not cars. CCD provided some light programming, such as musical acts and dance performances, as well as more casual DIY programming, such as corn hole and ping pong, and a few seating pods.
After a study of federal data recently found that Memphis had the highest per-capita car crash death rate in the entire country - and the highest per-capita death rate for pedestrians of any metropolitan area - advocates there have launched a fundraising campaign for a new initiative called Street Fair, which will be dedicated to "advocating for a better transportation system for everyone - no matter how you choose to get around."
Streetfilms' Clarence Eckerson recently visited London to learn about ways transportation planners in the Big Smoke are re-envisioning their city's streets to put people over cars. In the Borough of Lambeth, Eckerson found "modal filters" where planners have effectively created small town squares by diverting traffic at intersections. The design enhanced safety for cyclists and pedestrians while opening up more space for outdoor dining and bio-swales.
I'm happy to present today, SB 71 on behalf of Senator Wiener, which will extend the statutory CEQA [California Environmental Quality Act] exemptions for transit and active transportation projects which significantly advance the state's climate, safety, and public health goals while improving access and mobility options to January 1, 2040. SB 71 will also make clarifying changes to existing law and provide exemption parity between ferry and other transit modes.
