Holidaymakers across parts of western Mexico have been urged to remain inside their hotels after the reported killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the alleged leader of one of the country's most powerful criminal organisations. Footage circulating online appeared to show passengers dropping to the floor at Guadalajara International Airport as gunfire was heard nearby, amid a wave of violence across Jalisco.
Airports in Paris and Amsterdam were the worst affected, with the Dutch authorities saying more than 1,000 travellers had been forced to spend the night at Schiphol, one of Europe's busiest hubs. Six people have died in weather-related accidents as the continent reels from the most bitter cold snap of the winter so far. Five of those deaths were confirmed in France on Tuesday, while a woman died in Bosnia as heavy snow and rain sparked floods and power outages across the Balkans.
California's wet winter continued Saturday as rain fell across the Southland, grounding flights coming in and out of Santa Barbara Airport and causing extensive road closures along the coast. The soggy weather is expected to continue through Tuesday with the heaviest downfalls tapering off by mid-day Monday, according to the National Weather Service. However, even light rain can have an outsized impact when it comes on the heels of other heavy winter storms, said Robbie Munroe, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
BKA chief Holger Munch said the drone sightings represent a "significant situation of danger." German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in October that the German government believes Russia is behind many of the drone sightings over German territory. Munch told Bild that it cannot be assumed with "100% certainty" that all of the suspicious drones are being guided by Russia. However, he said he suspects the drones are being steered by a state actor aimed at sowing uncertainty in Germany.
Arrivals and departures were halted for several hours on Tuesday evening at Belgium's busiest airport, Brussels, leading to the cancellation of dozens of flights. The skies were also closed over Liege airport, an important hub for freight transport, leading to further cancellations, delays and diversions. Meanwhile, the mayor of the Flemish town of Diest reported that police and army officers had spotted four drones at the nearby Schaffen military airbase on Tuesday.
