There are so many flavors of betrayal to sample in "Schrodinger's Wife". We've got Trowbridge's grievances, whatever it is Todd imagines is going on between Grace and Hal, Hal's supreme annoyance with Kate's inability to just enjoy her new relationship, Stuart's difficulty processing what Billie knew about Rayburn (and when she knew it), and Kate's horror at Grace and Hal's betrayal (once again!) of Trowbridge when she figures out that they're the ones who made off with the incredibly dangerous Poseidon drone. Whew!
Accompanying the photo are two of his quotes. I am not a spy who writes novels, I am a writer who briefly worked in the secret world, one says. The second, after questioning whom, if anyone, we can trust, continues: What is loyalty to ourselves, to whom, to what? Whom, if anyone, can we love? And what is the caring individual's relationship to the institutions he services?
We're told to "trust our gut," and to look for shifty eyes or nervous fidgeting. Detectives in movies and TV shows spot liars through micro-expressions. Yet across hundreds of experiments, the average rate of accurate lie-truth discrimination is 54% (Bond & DePaulo, 2006). In fact, computers often outperform judges on deciding who will skip bail, and seasoned police officers who are most confident in their "lie-detecting" abilities are often the least accurate (Gladwell, 2019).
A faithful recreation of authentic human interaction, based on extensive research of Earth programming. Episode title: 'The Devourer of Trust' (Translated roughly from Zeckan as 'The Shocking Betrayal That Would Surely Happen to Any Earth Family'.) SCENE ONE: A perfectly normal Earth dwelling A warm and inviting 'Earth Home Unit'. The 'Central Nourishment Furnace' (stove) emits comforting smells of nutrient orbs (potatoes). The dwelling is orderly. The 'Domestic Harmony Aura' is at its peak. Surely, nothing bad will happen.
Jake is sweating bullets, having just quit his job and signed a $30,000-a-month lease on the new restaurant. Vince is telling him, "It's not a prison sentence." Wes and Estelle are conveniently having their meet-cute by the jukebox, while Roxie and Tony are back in the kitchen, about to be swept up in the "Isle of Joy" Vince is desperately trying to build.
At twenty-three, I launched my first real business with another partner-an upscale pet resort. We had climate-controlled suites, a beautiful play yard, and classical music playing softly in the background. An elaborate four-tier fountain greeted guests in the lobby, where you could also view the handcrafted "Catio" patio built by my father himself. Within a few months, it was already turning a profit. On the surface, it seemed like a dream come true. But something felt off.
At a wedding reception in Ballymena, the Best Man delivered an entertaining speech, only for the groom to reveal that he and the Best Man had been having an affair with the bride.
She looked calm, poised, and strangely familiar like the kind of woman you see once in a wedding magazine and never forget. She wore a plain blue gown and carried a small overnight bag.
