The University of California system recently made waves by announcing a commitment " to fully decarbonize no later than 2045." Unlike many "carbon neutrality" or "net zero" plans that rely heavily on carbon offsets, the UC system plans to cut emissions from campus electricity and fossil fuel use by at least 90 percent from 2019 levels and to balance residual emissions by investing in projects to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Through a range of installations, models, and interactive elements, "Age of Nature" presents speculative yet achievable visions for future living. A tower of live mushrooms grows as a vertical field, freeing ground space for wilderness; facades are reimagined as miniature ecosystems; and filmmaker Liam Young's The Great Endeavor envisions a global workforce collectively removing CO₂ from the atmosphere using existing technologies. Together, these projects question how architecture can move beyond minimizing its impact to actively regenerate the environments it inhabits.
At the beginning of this year, a climate tech startup called CarbonCapture was ready to break ground on its first commercial pilot at a site in Arizona. But the project is now about to open 2,700 miles away, in Alberta, Canada. In 2024, the global average annual temperature exceeded 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels for the first time. Greenhouse-gas emissions are rising, and the window to reach net zero by 2050 is closing fast. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can play a crucial part by improving energy and resource-use efficiency, accelerating innovation and expanding people's capacity to act. But without swift, deliberate effort, this opportunity could slip away.
"We are able to market it as two products," Arbor co-founder and CEO Brad Hartwig told TechCrunch. "We're selling carbon-free base load energy as well as net [carbon] removals."
