Sometimes, there is no explaining the game of hockey. The Colorado Avalanche, one of the best teams in the NHL, dominated the struggling Bruins through the first 14 minutes of Saturday's matinee at the Garden. But just when you thought you could chalk up the seventh straight loss for the B's, they somehow turned it around and handed the Avs their first regulation loss of the season, 3-2.
According to the official game record, it was an unassuming play. B. Nix pass deep left to C. Sutton to NYG 21 for 22 yards (D. Banks). But that passing play was a testament to trust. As in how much trust Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has in wide receiver Courtland Sutton, how much coach Sean Payton trusts Sutton and how much Sutton wants to be the player trusted the most.
Ten days ago, Joe Flacco didn't know whether he'd get to experience again what he felt Thursday night. Just last week, Flacco was a quarterback who had been benched in his 18th NFL season. On Thursday night, he was celebrating another comeback win in the AFC North. Nine days after his trade to the Cincinnati Bengals, he led his new club to a 33-31 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Paycor Stadium.
That's probably the best way to describe his 1-yard touchdown run after he fell when right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on his foot -- though Coen offered up "goofy." Lawrence tried to get back up, stumbled again, then got to his feet with the intention of throwing the ball away before seeing a lane and taking off, eventually diving into the end zone with 23 seconds left.
Things were teetering on a knife-edge for the depleted Washington Commanders in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Fans were fearing the worst after a sluggish start, but head coach Dan Quinn's squad once again proved they were made of the right stuff. The Commanders dusted themselves off. After some heated words on the sidelines, everyone got on the same page. Washington scored 27 unanswered points, moving to within one game of the Philadelphia Eagles atop the NFC East along the way.
STANFORD Ben Gulbranson's first two games at Stanford could hardly have been worse a combined 251 yards on 62 attempts, with three interceptions and no touchdowns. But the Oregon State transfer turned a corner just in time to lead the Cardinal to victory in the Bill Walsh Legacy Game. Gulbranson threw for 444 yards, the third-most in Stanford history, and engineered an 80-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes as the Cardinal beat San Jose State 30-29 Saturday night at Stanford Stadium.
The New York Islanders pulled off a massive comeback win against their crosstown rivals, the New York Rangers, on Thursday. After blowing a 2-0 lead, the Isles surrendered four unanswered goals to go down 4-2. But then, the Rangers fell apart in the third period, giving up a three-spot. The Islanders gritted out a gutsy, 5-4 win. The key to the Isles' victory came on two goals from camp hopeful Gleb Veremyev. The 22-year-old scored twice, including the equalizer at the 15:17 mark of the third period. Veremyev's second goal of the night capped off an impressive showing for the undrafted NCAA star.
Leading 24-17 with less than seven minutes to go, Darnold and the Seahawks faced a third-and-9 from their own 28, needing to move the chains if they didn't want to give Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers solid field position for a potential tying drive. Seattle got the shotgun snap off with one second left on the play clock but failed to pick up blitzing linebacker Patrick Queen.
BOSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman legged out an hard chopper down the third-base line for an infield single with two outs in the eighth inning to drive in the go-ahead run, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 11-7 for their third straight victory. Jarren Duran and Trevor Story followed with RBI doubles off Cade Smith (6-6) for Boston's second four-run inning of the game. Justin Slaten (2-4) earned the win with a perfect eighth inning.
But after Levante took a 2-0 lead into the break -- thanks to an Iván Romero strike and a José Luis Morales penalty -- Flick went back to a more familiar Barça side at half-time, replacing Rashford and Casadó with Dani Olmo and Gavi. Pedri and Torres were on target early in the second half as Barça levelled the game, with Unai Elgezabal heading in a stoppage-time own goal after good work from Lamine Yamal on the right wing to complete the turnaround.
