SAN JOSE An affordable housing tower that would produce hundreds of units in downtown San Jose is set to break ground in early 2026 now that the project has landed all the financing that's needed for construction. The 220-unit project is located at 470 South Market St. in the city's SoFA district, according to The Core Cos., a Bay Area real estate firm that is leading its development.

Local News The new zoning rules aim to boost housing and revitalize the city's struggling commercial core. In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Boston Zoning Commission approved new regulations allowing taller buildings downtown - a key part of the city's plan to revive the struggling commercial core. The 10-0 vote marks the final step beyond the mayor's signature in a close to seven-year effort to modernize downtown zoning rules.

"I'm so excited that I actually went and bought a Vanderbilt hat, and I can't wait to welcome them into my district," said San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey.

The most visible example of downtown SF's post-COVID malaise was the Westfield San Francisco Centre, which lost its Nordstrom and its Bloomingdale's.

The Santa Clara corridor beautification initiative represents the beginning of a broader plan to create a more vibrant and cohesive downtown San Jose.

"For my entire tenure here at Pittsburg, it has been a hot-button issue. Originally, when all the investment went in downtown, I think there was a hope that it would be able to thrive almost completely off restaurants and retail businesses."

The festival, from 3 to 7 p.m., is the highlight of Oakland's Small Business Week activities. It's a celebration and an acknowledgement of what small business means to The Town.
