On August 6, 2009, Stephen left his home at Rose Hill, Wicklow town, and walked down through different walkways along the back of the town to Marlton road, where he was collected by a silver Nissan Pulsar car and driven through Redcross to Ballydonnell Wood. At the woods, Gardaí believe there was a group of suspects present. Stephen was then fatally injured, shot and buried in a shallow grave at the woods.

A search of premises in Ballymun, conducted by the Ballymun divisional Drugs Unit with assistance from various police units, led to the seizure of a significant amount of suspected heroin and cocaine.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission confirmed that no criminal proceedings will follow the investigation into Mr Nkencho’s death, allowing the inquest to proceed.

An Garda Síochána has categorically denied any allegations of a strip-search or cavity search, insisting that all procedures followed the Treatment of Persons in Custody Regulations.

The incident unfolded on Abbey Street, Dublin 1, around 1pm, resulting in a Garda member sustaining non-life-threatening injuries to his arm.
