"The fun thing about teaching your subject of study is that you can make adjustments you wish had been made when you were a student; to make that subtle and possibly frivolous change you wish to see in the world. For me, that was designing on paper."
The design elements I would use for my maximalist work takes inspiration from tarpaulin advertisements and posters you would see across Metro Manila. The visual character of these advertisements are really kitsch.
Braulio gives the crowd an incredible insight into a decade's worth of poster designs for Good Room, revealing how he finds inspiration in the most mundane things just by paying attention to what has 'already been designed' and remixing it into something new.
"the one flyer that I think, received the most attention last year was Doomscrolling Live for a small ambient listening night organized in Antwerp by my friends SYSTM. I don't remember how many times people have come up to me and said ' Oh I loved that poster you did with the goblin '," he says. "Doing self-initiated things, local things, things for your friends does pay off."
Massaranduba, the small agricultural town in the south of Brazil that Pedro grew up in is far from sci-fi, but this graphic designer's imagination takes him some place else. From posters, illustration, magazine layouts and typefaces (such as pieces that focus on sci-fi author Ursula K. Le Guin 's fictional Kesh alphabet), Pedro works digitally with a focus on textures and grit, using dithers and fractals to build upon visual world's textures. His projects are "mood-centred", which begin by assembling references from all over to refine feelings that are conjured up by consuming films, fashion, music and other visual forms.
In his graphic design work, Aldon transforms periodic tables and dense masses of information into maximalist pieces of design, expressing information whilst also challenging the impossibility of taking it all in. Data sprawls across screens and pages, overlapping in overloads and feedback loops, communicating more the aesthetic of information rather than its substance, playing with images we have all seen in science classes or colour palettes. These are exploded infographics.
Federico Seneca (18911976) emerged as one of the most influential graphic designers of the early 20th century, known for fusing avantgarde artistry with commercial clarity. As art director for Perugina and later Buitoni, he reshaped Italian advertising by replacing literal imagery with bold, metaphordriven visuals. His most iconic contribution was the Baci chocolate identity, inspired by Hayez's *The Kiss*, featuring two lovers silhouetted against deep midnight blue. At the event, you can expect talks from Daniel Savage, a multi-disciplinary artist, designer, and animator whose work often focuses on exploring modular animation systems and process-driven work. As well as that, the graphic designer Sarah Elawad will be joining the stage to share the process behind her ultra-neon and kitsch graphic work which celebrates beauty, love and her culture through experimental prints, garments, video art and collage.
At next month's event, you can expect talks from Liang-Jung Chen, a London-based artist interested in material culture as they work across several mediums. After going viral with their UK indefinite leave to remain project, which was a thrilling piece of screen-recorded performance art within Microsoft Excel, Liang-Jung will be joining the stage to elaborate on how that project came about whilst introducing their versatile practice.

It's easy, for me at least, to be cynical about the state of design. Our visual environment can feel bland, everything from brands to buildings homogenized around similar styles. The ever-impending AI takeover can make the future of this work uncertain. My reading around design this year tended to focus on two things: looking back and looking ahead. In looking through design history, I was looking for glimpses of alternative ways of designing: the experimental, the absurd, the weird.

This incredible lineup of creative contributors began as a call-out to friends and colleagues of Aya's amongst her work as a cultural strategist, producer and curator for grassroots initiatives and non-profits, before it snowballed into something with a much wider remit. It was important to the book's editor to have a range of figures to contribute across disciplines. "Many of the book's contributors are Palestinian," she says, "the rest are steadfast allies."

Many laptops offer a simple utility to its user; with nondescript design, understated performance, and generic features. Y'know, 90% of what you see in any given café or hotdesking office. Then you have 'power laptops', bigger, bulkier studio or gaming machines, with a thicker chassis to house a dedicated graphics card and maybe a touch of flair to their external design, to allow their now-impoverished/indebted owner to show off a bit.
Authoritarian governments have always suppressed protest and dissent, but democracies have done so as well. Ironically, we are now witnessing increasing restrictions on the right to protest from governments whose very foundations were built through the kinds of protest they now seek to suppress. Historically social crises reach the mainstream via protest - which can take many forms - this helps society reevaluate and evolve, making it more understanding and tolerant.
For a while now, we've been seeing companies that fired a bunch of their human workers in favor of artificial intelligence move to recoup some of that flesh-and-blood labor. Now, that push has resulted in a new line of gig work: slop fixer-uppers, who get paid to improve AI-generated art, writing, and code - by making it less, well, sloppy.
This week it's the 70th birthday of the Guinness Book of Records, that gloriously bonkers compendium of human achievement that celebrates the people who can stuff the most marshmallows in their mouth, balance the most spoons on their body, and hula hoop underwater for the longest time. It features everything from standard athletic victories to "most high fives in 30 seconds" and "fastest time to make a pasta necklace."
