As with most major holidays, celebrations leading up to Halloween are just as important as (if not more than) the main event. In Portland this week, the eves before All Hallow's Eve promise cauldrons of tom yum pozole, classic horror screenings, and the real Big Scary-a novel that asks, "What if the Cascadia earthquake came while you were noshing on IKEA meatballs??" Plus, screenings of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein are a solid reminder that a woman kinda-sorta invented the sci-fi genre.

Lovers of classical music and ballet are in luck this weekend. Peter Jaffe conducts Symphony San Jose's annual Symphonic Spooktacular, featuring selections from Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde, Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera, Alan Menken's Little Shop of Horrors and Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. Head downtown to Morris American Bar for an evening of mystery and music on the eve of Halloween. Don your best spooky or glamorous costume and a mask to sip on-theme cocktails and dance to the beats of a live DJ; tickets include a welcome shooter ($24.50). Desert 5 Spot DC | October 31 This new rodeo hotspot is adding some ghoulish fun to their hangout for country music lovers.

It's time for haunted houses, cosmic classes, gothic feasts, spooky drag, and witchy marketplaces as we approach All Hallows' Eve. But it's a season of bounty, too, with the openings of Bourbon Steak and Via Aurelia; the annual Foodwise Sunday Supper; street markets filled with art, music, and shopping; and plenty of brunch. The San Francisco Halloween Pub Crawl 2025: Crawloween Returns! This year, it's expected to be even bigger, with new bars, new surprises and four nights of non-stop Halloween excitement. October in San Francisco brings Fleet Week, amazing weather and the San Francisco Halloween Pub Crawl, better known as Crawloween. Produced by CrawlSF, this massive 4-day event has become a Bay Area tradition, bringing together thousands of people for an amazing Halloween weekend filled with drinks, DJs, costumes and a whole bunch of fun.

Oktoberfest Tech at Night: Techtoberfest-The Tech Interactive invites guests to an Oktoberfest celebration of the science of beer and brews. Enjoy the museum after hours with a full bar, DJs, and pop-up experiences, plus full access to all Tech Interactive exhibits-including an EDM laser show in the IMAX Dome Theater curated by Universal Grammar, featuring Chale Brown, Zuri Alexa, and a guest DJ. Beer tastings will be led by Hapa's Brewing Company, Fox Tale Fermentation Project and Clandestine Brewery.

Halloween is one of my favorite times to visit theme parks around the country. Many of the best theme parks in the United States have incredible Halloween-themed parties or haunts to attend, and even better, some are included with your overall ticket into the park. Whether you're looking for kid-friendly destinations like Walt Disney World or Dollywood, or an all-out fright fest at Universal Orlando Resort that brings the intensity level up to 13, there's a theme park Halloween event for all ages.

Legoland Discovery Center Bay Area is getting into the Halloween spirit Sept. 25-Oct. 31 with a family-friendly Monster Party. Visitors to the attraction, located at the Great Mall in Milpitas, can create a pumpkin to add to the Monster Garden, make a magical potion, go on a Lego Monster Rocker scavenger hunt in Miniland and take a scary selfie with a Lego witch.
