Until recently, "liminal spaces" were only known to architects. But on the Internet, storytellers and amateur filmmakers have morphed these ubiquitous places you pass by on errand runs into caverns of cosmic terror. Now, a new A24 film from 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons is set to kick off the summer and christen it the season of liminal horror.
Liminal spaces and the "backrooms" have become overused concepts on the internet, with people labeling any room or area that is even slightly off as some creepy space. It's annoying and tiring. But I still like the idea of eerie, dead areas hidden in our world in places like forgotten hallways and empty hotel rooms. I also like fast-paced boomer shooters that feel great.
"I always dream of the same mall." So begins a recent post on the popular subreddit r/The MallWorld. The post continued: "It has a very vintage feel to it. It always has warm amber lighting and wooden guard rails. It has 3 main floors, and one secret lower floor. "The lower floor is usually kept pristine, a time capsule of the 90's. The stores are closed, but the merchandise remains. It smells like my kindergarten class did.."
Dreamcore came out in January of this year and it's a perfectly good time if you love spooky vibes but aren't too jazzed about screaming monsters and jumpscares. Developed by Montralulz, Dreamcore is a directionless, HUD-free wandersim that takes you through strange, abandoned levels that almost feel endless. The game intentionally tries to make you feel lost with its lack of clear-cut instructions on what to do.
