Heineman fired a career-high 10 shots on goal against the Sabres, a volume rarely seen in today's NHL, and his tenth attempt finally broke through. With 29 seconds left in regulation and the Islanders on the power play, Heineman snapped home the game-tying goal to force overtime in a game the Isles eventually lost 3-2 in a five-round shootout before a sellout crowd of 19,070 at KeyBank Center.
Not once did Toronto trail in this game, and they cruised to victory in the final 10 minutes. It wasn't perfect, but for tonight, we'll enjoy the two points in regulation for the first time since the Leafs ' November 5 win over Utah. It was a sleepy start to the night. While the Boston Bruins won five straight entering this game, they were without Elias Lindholm and Charlie McAvoy, and they still managed to claw out a 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs. A lot happened over the 60 minutes, but the underlying story is that an undermanned Bruins team outworked a fairly healthy Leafs team, costing Toronto two points. The Leafs have been searching for better starts, and at the very start of this game, they momentarily found one.
