He abandoned the requirements of a scientific analysis by ignoring information that contradicts his opinion. Specifically, he claims that nuclear power is needed to fill the gaps when wind and solar are not sufficient. He mentions batteries but discounts the possibility of increasing their capacity. And he fails to mention other storage possibilities such as pump storage, compressed air, heat batteries, etc.
Newsom said Assembly Bill 255, which would have allowed cities to use up to 10% of their state funds to pay for "recovery housing," was unnecessary. That's because using state funds for sober housing is already allowed, the governor said. He said "recent guidance" makes that clear. That was a big surprise to Assemblymember Matt Haney, who had spent the past two years working on the bill Newsom was now saying had been moot all along.
"If you know you need to get off of and away from drugs, you shouldn't be forced into housing where drug use is allowed and where recovery is not supported," he said. "Some folks won't go into housing because they know that it actually is dangerous for them because they're still experiencing an addiction. ... This isn't about having zero tolerance to drug use. It's about having environments where recovery is explicitly supported, and that is the goal."
