Fiscal watchdog argues Mamdani's free bus push won't make transit more affordable, recommends Fair Fares expansion in report | amNewYork
"CBC President Andrew Rein stated that expanding Fair Fares would make transit affordable for more low-income New Yorkers than eliminating bus fares, and at a fraction of the cost. He noted that nearly three-quarters of commuters earning under 250% of the federal poverty level use the subway, not the bus, to get to work."
"Rein emphasized that expanding Fair Fares to 250% of the poverty level is a cost-effective choice, allowing one in four New York City workers to access half-price transit fares for their daily commutes."
The Citizens Budget Commission recommends expanding the Fair Fares program to include individuals earning up to 250% of the federal poverty level. Currently, the program offers half-priced transit fares to those earning at or below 150% of the poverty level. The report indicates that expanding eligibility would benefit more low-income New Yorkers and cost significantly less than providing free bus rides. The proposed expansion would cost $146 million annually, compared to the $900 million estimated for free bus fares.
