""I'm really in awe just being in here to see how vast it is, just the power of being near a natural body of water like this," said Steve Chesler, a member of Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park."
"The path is lined with raised berms, grassy man-made hills designed to help control coastal storm surge, explained Chesler."
"During Hurricane Sandy, floodwaters rose up to 12 feet above sea level, highlighting the flood-prone nature of coastal Williamsburg and Greenpoint, according to Katherine Conkling Thompson."
"The wildflower meadow and the lush native grasses and plants will also provide a 'sponge effect' for managing stormwater."
The Motiva parcel, a newly opened green space in Bushwick Inlet Park, has transformed a previously vacant site into a lush area featuring native plants and flood protections. Once a shipbuilding operation, the 1.8-acre plot was purchased by the city in 2014. The design reflects its origins as a tidal wetland, including a walking path, a small beach, and a wildflower meadow. The park serves as a recreational area and provides natural flood protections for the surrounding low-lying neighborhoods.
