General Motors Has Big Plans For Your Old EV Battery
Briefly

General Motors and Redwood Materials launched a partnership to recycle old EV battery packs, converting them into energy storage systems. This initiative aims to reduce waste from totaled electric vehicles while providing a sustainable solution to battery disposal. Currently, many retired batteries face grim fates, often ending up in landfills or being processed into a black mass. Redwood, founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel, is focused on creating a closed-loop battery supply chain. By this partnership, GM will supply both new and retired battery packs to Redwood for repurposing.
Under the new agreement between GM and Redwood Materials, Redwood will help recycle GM-supplied battery packs into energy storage devices, promoting scalable, cost-effective energy storage.
The collaboration aims to prevent EV batteries from contributing to the e-waste crisis by repurposing retired battery packs for new applications in energy storage.
