How Benji's Buns spearheaded NYC's cinnamon roll sensation and the man behind it amNewYork
"I always dreamed of living in Americaand now, living here, it's very surreal. I kind of feel like I'm in a movie, Michael said."
"I always felt there was a gap in my life of wanting to do something in foodI love real estate. I love selling properties and everything. It was great, Michael said. But I wanted something where I was actually being hands-on and creative and making something that was my own. For me, that's baking."
"I really got into cinnamon rolls and making different flavors and varieties. And I suppose that was my inspiration, Michael said."
Benji's Buns is a West Village bakery at 122 Christopher St. dedicated exclusively to cinnamon rolls. The interior features warm, sun-colored decor and yellow garlands, and the bakery attracts long lines and stanchion ropes. The scent of cinnamon and brown sugar fills the space. Founded in Ealing, London in July 2022, the bakery expanded to New York after owner Benjamin Michael relocated at age 24. Michael transitioned from a career in real estate to focus on hands-on baking after developing a passion for cinnamon rolls during the COVID-19 pandemic. The London location offered six non-rotating vegan flavors.
