7,000 steps a day could be enough to improve health, say researchers
Briefly

Research shows that walking 7,000 steps daily significantly decreases the risk of serious health conditions such as dementia, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. The NHS recommends a brisk 10-minute walk, but even 7,000 steps yield health benefits. Analysis of data from over 160,000 adults reveals that walking this amount reduces cancer death risk by 37% and type 2 diabetes by 14%. The findings emphasize the value of physical activity and show that even lower step counts decrease disease risk compared to very low activity levels.
Walking 7,000 steps a day was associated with a reduced risk of dying from cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, and cardiovascular disease.
Compared with those who walked 2,000 steps a day, achieving the 7,000 daily step target was linked to a 37% reduction in risk of dying from cancer.
The research indicated that even 4,000 steps per day reduced the risk of disease, compared with very low activity levels.
Although the risk continues to decrease above 7,000 steps, the rate at which it reduces that risk starts to slow.
