Canvas, a learning management system used by UC, Cal State, USC, Stanford, and California community colleges, went offline during finals week after a cybersecurity breach at Instructure. Students and faculty at dozens of California campuses lost access to coursework, readings, and assignments. Attackers demanded payment by May 12 to prevent release of stolen data. The breach followed a disclosure that a hacker group claimed it stole hundreds of millions of records tied to students and employees at about 9,000 schools across the U.S., Australia, and Europe. The group ShinyHunters took credit. A threat message directed schools to contact the attackers privately to negotiate a settlement. Instructure placed Canvas in maintenance mode and said it expected to restore service soon.
