Ghost bike memorial to dead cyclist removed by 'grossly insensitive' London council
Briefly

The Critical Mass bike ride will return to Cable Street to put back a memorial for Matheus Piovesan, who was killed in a collision last July. Tower Hamlets council previously removed a ghost bike memorial without notifying friends or family. Mr Piovesan was a Brazilian journalist in London since 2019, and he died at the scene of the accident. Friends believe the memorial could have encouraged witnesses. Although three men were arrested related to his death, no charges have been filed yet, and the police are still gathering evidence.
The fatal collision with a car happened near the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road in Shadwell at approximately 12.30am, resulting in Matheus Piovesan's death.
The decision by Tower Hamlets council to quietly remove this white memorial bike feels like they are trying to sweep Mr Piovesan's death under the rug.
Mariana Steffen, a friend, emphasized that nobody has been charged with Matheus' killing and urged anyone with information to come forward.
Three men were reportedly arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but were later released on bail without charges being filed.
