A fire broke out at a Cork property shortly before 1am, leading to the death of 62-year-old Peter Lyall. Neighbours raised the alarm after assisting a woman in her 60s who escaped the blaze. Firefighters from Cork Fire Brigade responded quickly, finding Mr. Lyall unresponsive inside the house. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead soon after. A post-mortem examination will be conducted, and an investigation into the fire's cause is underway.
The Cork Fire Brigade units had managed to bring the blaze under control within minutes of arriving at the scene, although significant smoke and fire damage occurred.
Neighbours reported assisting a woman in her 60s who managed to escape the smoke-filled property, but were unable to access the house due to heat and smoke.
Mr. Lyall, aged 62, was discovered unresponsive in a ground floor room and despite desperate resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been informed and a full post-mortem examination will be conducted at Cork University Hospital, with a file prepared for the coroner.
