On May 17, 2025, Jose Luis Gomez-Guallazaca, a 58-year-old man from the Bronx, was killed after being struck by a 25-year-old e-scooter driver in Staten Island. The collision occurred around 7:40 p.m. as Gomez-Guallazaca attempted to cross a one-way street. Initial investigations revealed that the e-scooter driver was thrown from the scooter and both parties were transported to Richmond University Medical Center; Gomez-Guallazaca succumbed to his injuries there.
