Rice weevils are pests that infiltrate pantries as eggs laid inside grains of rice. Once hatched, they begin consuming the rice, reducing its quantity over time, sometimes within eight months. These insects have a strong snout, known as a rostrum, which allows them to pierce rice grains effectively. When threatened, rice weevils can play dead to avoid detection. Female weevils carve holes in grains to lay their eggs but will ingest any eggs laid incorrectly outside the rice grain, ensuring survival of their progeny.
The rice weevil is smaller than a grain of rice, but it could reduce your precious bounty to this in about eight months.
If they think they are in danger, they will play dead. This makes them blend in with their surroundings quite effectively.
Mom weevil carves out a hole in a grain of rice to lay her egg, but if she misses, she recycles it by slurping it up.
They love carbs, and their long snout, called a rostrum, is strong enough to pierce raw grains of rice.
