Hierarchy is often seen as the root of injustice. Caroline Levine emphasizes that while hierarchical structures can manage complexity, they may inadvertently support injustice. She advocates for rotating roles in organizations and developing skills to embrace complexity. Levine highlights the role of imagination in the arts, enabling free thought without harm. However, she warns of the potential danger in hierarchy contributing to systemic injustices. The challenge lies in finding ways to think about hierarchy that do not perpetuate injustice while embracing complexity as a valuable skill.
In the arts we have the freedom to think crazy thoughts. We're allowed to think things that don't exist, or that aren't practical. We can go to these imaginary places that don't hurt anybody, just in order to think that thought.
There's the danger of doing something idealistic, crazy - that I'm up for, and I'm used to - but there's a danger of feeding injustice, and hierarchy sounds like it's going to go to the injustice side.
