A report indicates that the violent unrest in England and Northern Ireland during summer 2024 inflicted serious long-term effects on the health of affected communities. The study, conducted by People's Health Trust, surveyed over 50 community organizations and showed that nearly two-thirds believe individuals in these communities will likely encounter future racist violence. The chaos stemmed from the murder of three young girls, fueled by misinformation. Communities reported increased anxiety, stress, and fear, especially among Muslim girls. The charity urges government intervention to address root causes and to provide necessary support to those impacted.
This report lays bare the immediate and longer-term health impacts of racist violence. Last year's racist riots have left a deep scar, especially in communities already facing inequality, discrimination, and disinvestment.
Racialised communities in particular reported hyper-vigilance, heightened anxiety, chronic stress and fear of using public spaces. Muslim girls and women have been particularly affected, experiencing increasing levels of Islamophobia, racism and misogyny.
