Former Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan was seriously wounded in a stabbing on Oct. 20 near his Hartwell Street business, Cosmopolitan Dispensary. Flanagan sustained a punctured trachea and required emergency medical treatment. The alleged assailant, 31-year-old Corree Gonzales, pleaded not guilty to armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. Gonzales was also charged with assaulting four Fall River police officers during arrest and has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. Flanagan credited emergency crews with saving his life and described receiving widespread community support while recovering.
