Woman, 57, walking in road due to snow hit and killed by car on Route 28 in Wareham, DA says
"Around 8:40 p.m., Wareham police received a call from a passenger of a Volvo saying that the vehicle had just hit two pedestrians, the office of Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said in a press release. Police found an injured man and woman at the scene. Both were transported to a local hospital, where the woman, 57, died from her injuries, Cruz's office said."
"The surviving pedestrian told police that he and the woman, who was using a walker, were walking along the fog line of the highway due to snow covering the sidewalk, the DA said. The pedestrian said the pair was first hit by a black truck's passenger mirror, knocking them both down. The woman then moved towards the roadway, where she was struck by the Volvo, the DA said."
A 57-year-old woman died Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on a Wareham highway. Police responded around 8:40 p.m. after a caller reported a Volvo had hit two pedestrians; both were transported to a local hospital and the woman later died. The Volvo's driver and passenger remained at the scene and said they came around a bend, saw two people walking in the roadway, and believed the collision was unavoidable because of oncoming traffic. The surviving pedestrian said he and the woman, who used a walker, had been walking along the fog line because snow covered the sidewalk and were first struck by a black truck's passenger mirror before the woman was struck by the Volvo. Investigators continue to examine the crash while withholding the woman's name pending family notification.
