Oklo anticipates the collaboration will lead to repeatable templates for future projects as it works toward breaking ground on its first nuclear powerhouse. The company said last week that it had finished its pre-application readiness assessment for Phase 1 of its combined license application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

"The market for grid-scale batteries and backup power isn't just expanding; it's becoming essential infrastructure," said Kurt Kelty, vice president of battery, propulsion, and sustainability at GM. "Electricity demand is climbing, and it's only going to accelerate. To meet that challenge, the US needs energy storage solutions that can be deployed quickly, economically, and made right here at home. GM batteries can play an integral role."

But AI data centers come with a whole host of issues. They're energy hogs, and are very thirsty water drinkers.

The ongoing heatwave has strained the power system in the US, leading to increased outages and highlighting infrastructure vulnerabilities amidst growing energy demands from burgeoning AI data centres.

Core Scientific has signed a significant AI deal with CoreWeave that allows it to potentially deliver up to 300 megawatts of scale within three years.
