By the numbers: The monthly median price for a coworking membership in the Boston area is $235, about $10 more than the national median, according to CoworkingCafe's Q3 industry report. Higher-tiered plans and small offices within coworking spaces could cost two or three times that amount. Boston's median day pass price ($45) also exceeds the national median ($30), per the report.
Per the Economic Policy Institute, childcare for one infant in the U.S. costs more than public college tuition in 38 states. That, plus the reality that many people work remotely, makes the idea of a space that mixes childcare, coworking, and fitness needs appealing to parents. That's especially true in a world where more remote work means people are parenting more in bubbles than in villages.
"Although NeueHouse has created an extremely valuable business that is prized by members and event hosts, unfortunately, it has been burdened by legacy liabilities," according to the post on the company's website, which was attributed to the NeueHouse board. "Despite our best efforts to find a sustainable path forward - including exploring every possible solution to address these challenges - we have made the very difficult decision to wind down the business."
