Meat consumption in the U.S. is high, but plant-based diets can provide sufficient protein alternatives.
The contentious decision came as part of a "National Strategy for Food, Nutrition and Climate," setting out the government's aims until 2030 on balancing a healthy diet while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It was supposed to be published in 2023, the culmination of a direct-democracy initiative that immediately raised the hackles of agriculture lobbies that accused the government of threatening their livelihoods.
For although experts agree fresh meat can be a valuable source of proteins, healthy fats and essential micronutrients, some processed meat products are considered such a cancer risk that the World Health Organisation believes they should be slapped with a health warning. Key factors include how the animal was raised, the specific cut of meat, its fat content, and, crucially, how it is cooked or prepared.
Cross-cultural research consistently shows that men eat more meat than women, particularly beef and processed varieties. Large-scale surveys from the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia reveal not only larger portions but also more frequent meat consumption among men. Women, by contrast, tend to eat more plant-based foods and smaller servings of meat, while vegetarianism and veganism remain markedly more prevalent among women than men.
