We are not kidding, but it looks like Apple Maps might start showing ads pretty soon, maybe even next year. You know how, when you search for something in the App Store, some results are sponsored? Apparently, Apple's planning to do the same thing in Maps. Restaurants and local businesses will be able to pay to show up higher when you search.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the new Maps advertising system will mirror Apple's existing App Store Search Ads programme, where developers pay to promote their apps above organic search results. In the case of Maps, paid listings would appear more prominently than organic results when users search for specific categories like 'coffee shop near me' or 'Italian restaurant'. The goal is to offer businesses a way to stand out in a crowded local marketplace.

OpenAI updated its ChatGPT iOS app, allowing users to select Google Maps as the maps provider for local results, replacing Apple Maps.
