Can Liam Hemsworth really hack it as Geralt of Rivia? Will Toby Fox take as long with Deltarune Chapter 5 as the game's last updates? And what the hell is Randy Pitchford talking about, part 523? Welcome to another edition of Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku 's daily roundup of gaming news and culture. It's official, folks: there are too many games to play, again.
For example, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 players leveraged the power of the Stendhal build to wipe the floor with enemies until developer Sandfall Interactive toned down the damage, and Bungie has nerfed numerous Guardian builds over the years, much to the annoyance of the game's fanbase. Borderlands has often been an exception to that school of thought, as players have discovered killer combos between weapons, gear, and skills that have helped them overcome tough fights.
It seems Gearbox's decision to make a more grounded game with Borderlands 4, and step away from referential humour and internet slang has worked in its favour. Over on Steam, the game peaked at 207,479 concurrent players (via SteamDB) just hours after it went live. Considering some of the launch times, and the fact it wasn't out on consoles at that time, there's every chance the weekend will give these numbers a boost.
Players can also claim a legendary shotgun called the Forsaken Chaos by viewing two hours of the game via the Borderlands 4 category on Twitch. Gearbox notes on the Borderlands website that Midnight Defiance and Forsaken Chaos can't be earned at the same time, so collectively a person would need to watch four hours of the game to obtain both legendary weapons.
The cinematic trailer for Borderlands 4 has arrived just ahead of launch. The trailer shows the game's new set of Vault Hunters in action, and the footage is accompanied by the fast tempo of "Birds" by Turnstile. Familiar Borderlands characters can also be spotted in the cinematic chaos. This latest installment of Gearbox's looter-shooter lets players explore the dangerous planet of Kairos, which is ruled by a dictator known as the Timekeeper.
Gearbox's Borderlands 4 officially launches on September 12, but it's already available for PC--and on Steam, it's putting up big numbers. Steam's own public stats show that Borderlands 4 is Steam's top-selling title globally and in the US. It has exceeded 175,000 concurrent players to rank as Steam's No. 4 most-played game today. Borderlands 4 is rolling out to all console players at midnight, while PC players get to jump in a few hours earlier. 2K Games Borderlands 4 is set to release Sept. 12, 2025. It's launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. And while there was a bit of controversy earlier this year regarding how much the planet-trotting adventure will cost players, the game is launching at $70.
There are terminals in every Order Silo. Interacting with the device grants you control of the facility. You don't even need to defeat all enemies. Simply run past them and hack the terminal to complete the task. Order Silos are somewhat akin to Safehouses in that they also act as fast travel points. They have vending machines but no bounty boards. Once activated, a large balloon will fly out of the base. You can use your grapple to zip line and reach higher ledges.
This is the game's first region, and it already has a bunch of collectibles for you to discover. The three unique items that you're looking for also lead to a rather interesting location. Where to find all Fadefields Vault Fragments in Borderlands 4 The three Vault Key Fragments are located in the following sub-zones: Coastal Bonescape, The Howl, and Dissected Plateau. A detection radius also appears assuming you've taken control of the Order Silos in the region.
Health Attribute - Radix has a shield (blue) bar, followed by an armor (yellow) bar. You should have a Shock weapon and a Corrosive weapon to deal as much damage as possible. Pangolin Spawn - For some reason, Radik loves to summon Pangolins. You can eliminate one of them if your HP gets depleted and you need the self-revive/last stand.
It's true that the Psycho Bandit Fortnite skin was very popular in 2019, in part because it was only briefly available as a promotion for Borderlands 3. After appearing in the Epic Games Store for a limited time, Psycho Bandit wasn't officially available for purchase in Fortnite until it returned in April 2025. Mad Moxxi's Fortnite skin will be available to players who preorder Borderlands 4 on Epic Games Store, and as a standalone purchase for a limited time starting on September 29.
Borderlands 4 plays all the familiar refrains for which the franchise is known: You control one of four Vault Hunters as you gun down thousands of masked maniacs and mutated monsters. Taking down these hordes of enemies not only grants you valuable experience for leveling your character, but also millions of guns to loot. True to its pedigree, these weapons are a highlight; every encounter holds the potential to yield your new favorite weapon, a rush I never grew tired of during my 50-plus-hour playthrough.
"Part of the reason why the Hyperion manufacturer does not fully return ... is because the behavior that was connected with the Hyperion manufacturer was that you would start very inaccurate," Kao explained. "But as you held down the fire button for, like, an assault rifle or SMG or whatnot, it would become extremely accurate, the most accurate gun, but it would have to require you to unload at least the beginning or half of the mag to get there." While the end result was high accuracy, this kind of mechanic just didn't feel good in Borderlands gameplay, Kao says.
Voodoo Ranger, the popular IPA beer brand, has announced a partnership with 2K Games to create a special-edition Borderlands 4 IPA. The beer is called Voodoo Ranger x Borderlands 4 IPA, it comes in six-packs, and they're available across the US right now ( via BleedingCool). Each six-pack includes a QR code that offers up the chance to win a copy of Borderlands 4 and in-game "golden key" rewards.
Borderlands 4 Hazard Pay skin available to Shift account owners who opt-in to newsletters and marketing emails. Players will need to link their Shift account to their Borderlands 4 platform of choice, after which logging in to that Shift account in-game should reward the skin (though Gearbox notes players should allow for "up to a week" to receive in-game items).
That's always been the ambition, we just couldn't - because you have these load times, and we have to pinch you off and make a transition and just move data around, make you wait while we load s*** in. The technology finally caught up to that ambition.
Two Story Packs are scheduled to be released in 2026, with the first one planned for release in the first quarter of the year. Gearbox says its first Story Pack will be a bloody, cosmic-horror-inspired tale entitled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. As the title suggests, this DLC will star Moxxi's daughter Ellie, a trend that will continue in future DLC drops as players can expect to see a few familiar faces pop up.
Stroll by Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 display at PAX West and you'll see fans quietly playing the Divinity: Original Sin board game. Linger a little too long though, and you'll hear what sounds like a car crashing through a McDonald's drive-thru in the far corner of the show floor. And then another, and another. Follow the piercing sounds for long enough and you'll arrive at the Borderlands 4 Ripper Rage Room, by far the most ridiculous marketing stunt at this year's expo.
"I've been on the game for a couple of years, and it was definitely something from the moment that I came on-board, when I was talking to Sam, the grounded tone was a priority," Clark said. "Grounding the humor in the world, he made it very clear that if I tried to put a meme in the game, he would come to my house with a baseball bat [laughs]. So, it was definitely in the brief from the beginning to make the tone fit the world."
