These stickers are not only miniature relics from a history of design - tracing visual developments from art deco to Swiss minimalism - they also evidence a parallel boom in print ephemera, when advances in chromolithography allowed commercial artists to translate their talents to mass production for the first time.
The exhibition highlights the works of Dirk Bikkembergs, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, and Marina Yee, showcasing their individual paths and collective impact in the design and fashion industry.
Regardless of the address, the revered fashion designer always, unabashedly, combined old with new, shedding fresh light on various historical design movements and their most important pioneers. Most of these homes have been the subject of expansive magazine print features and the fodder of tabloid headlines but little focus has ever really been placed on his workspaces.
In the show, "dirty" extends to anything that breaks fashion's pact with propriety. Here are clothes caked in grime, blotted with makeup, stiffened by salt, pieced from trash, frayed, and faded. The garments span decades, from the 1980s through the mid-2000s, when the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier built their fame on defying convention, to today, when corporatization has made such daring increasingly rare. But forgoing practicality frees certain designers from the demands that the body be polite-and thereby policed.
The V&A is stuffed with a truly magnificent array of weird and wonderful things from centuries of human existence. Under one roof, you can find the sixteenth century Raphael Cartoons, Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, an Iranian carpet thought to be the oldest in the world, a Storm Trooper suit from the Star Wars movies, a diamond butterfly ring worn by Beyonce and... a Labubu.

Maybe that's the charm of the International Museum of Dinnerware Design's new exhibition on ashtrays - invoking an era before health codes and Mayor Bloomberg. Or reaching back even further, when you might see a Similac-branded ashtray in the office of your OB/GYN.
It's easy, for me at least, to be cynical about the state of design. Our visual environment can feel bland, everything from brands to buildings homogenized around similar styles. The ever-impending AI takeover can make the future of this work uncertain. My reading around design this year tended to focus on two things: looking back and looking ahead. In looking through design history, I was looking for glimpses of alternative ways of designing: the experimental, the absurd, the weird.

These skulls, though, are only the latest in a decades-long trend that, according to United States Patent and Trademark Office records, saw the rate of skulls and skeletons in American logos increase by a factor of almost seven from the 1980s to the 2010s. Throughout the last decade, skulls and skeletons appeared in nearly one of every 200 new U.S. logos, a number that has dipped only slightly in the 2020s.
While many historic trends should probably stay in the past, the best beanbag chairs are one item making a very welcome comeback. These playful pieces of furniture emerged on the design scene in the late 1960s when Italy's Zanotta Design commissioned Cesare Paolini, Piero Gatti, and Franco Teodoro to design the first beanbag chair. 10 years after 's final bow, the aesthetics of the era maintain a grip on modern design lovers as strong as Don Draper's mid-morning Old Fashioned. The show catalyzed the renewal of public interest in midcentury modern design with its depiction of geometric offices and warm, open residences. Like "hipster" or "democracy," though, the true definition of "midcentury modern" has steadily eroded from overuse and blatant misrepresentation on Facebook Marketplace. Its principles, however, endure.
