Since 2020 all employers have been required to provide paid COVID leave on top of all other leave required by law. That included up to two weeks depending upon the business size, and additional time for vaccination.

The sick note in the U.S. typically demands details about symptoms and recovery, while in Europe, a simple statement suffices: 'This patient is unfit to work'.

Starting July 1, 2025, Alaska employers with 15 or more employees must allow workers to accrue and use at least 56 hours of sick leave each year.

With no physical check-up required, employees can get sick certificates issued digitally for a few euros, undermining the integrity of workplace absence policies.
