As a child, the Columbine school shooting impacted my elementary school experience and beyond. My naivete about safety was instantly shattered. It was the first time I realized that danger could come into a classroom at any moment. Years passed, and I became a mom. As my daughter approached school age, school rules changed, active shooter drills became the norm, and every parent dreaded the emergency call that their child's school was on lockdown. I didn't want to live in that daily state of worry.
Atlas, along with its father-and-son owners Gary and Matthew Weisenberg, were arraigned two years ago on numerous criminal charges in connection with illegal dumping and handling of hazardous waste from July 2020 and August 2022. A little more than a year later, a compressed gas canister ignited at the scrap yard, causing a fiery explosion on the first day of school, after which the district attorney's office filed additional charges against the defendants.
We are also immensely grateful to Gov. Newsom, Pro Tem Mike McGuire, Speaker Robert Rivas and to so many of our non-Jewish colleagues of both political parties who have stood as staunch allies in the fight against hate. Together, we will continue to fight to ensure that students of all faiths and backgrounds are safe, welcome, and can thrive in our schools.
Provincial police say they are investigating a "significant disturbance" that involved pepper spray and multiple altercations in the crowd of a high school football game in Caledon, Ont., Friday. Officers in attendance at Friday night's game at Humberview Secondary School responded around 8 p.m. to reports of pepper spray being deployed amongst "a large gathering of students" in the crowd, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a news release Monday.
Police say an official from East Brooklyn Community School in East Flatbush school called 911 after another student reported that the student in question brought a gun to school. Officers responded and found a loaded 9mm. Last month, a high school student in Queens was taken into custody when cops found a loaded gun on him after he allegedly posted an online threat about shooting up the school.
The report described a clash between male juveniles that led an alleged negligent discharge of a firearm, San Jose police said in a news release Tuesday. Detectives eventually identified a 16-year-old boy as a suspect in the shooting, and learned that the boy was also suspected of shooting off a gun in other instances, including one near a school in Milpitas, police said.
LIVERMORE Police here raided the home of a middle school student late last month, seizing a Glock pistol, ammunition, and a BB gun, after a report that the boy had robbed a fellow student at a local coffee shop, court records show. The boy, identified by authorities only as a student at Christensen Middle School, was suspected of robbing a fellow student at a Starbucks of a popular $80 backpack tag.
A 31-year-old parent is facing two charges after allegedly driving dangerously through the property of their child's school in Oshawa Friday, Durham police say. At 3:40 p.m. Friday, officers responded to reports of a vehicle driving dangerously through the parking lot and sports field at G.L. Roberts Collegiate Vocational Institute, Durham police said in a news release Tuesday. The vehicle was also seen driving dangerously toward students in the area, before the driver fled along a nearby waterfront trail, police said.
"What we know is that a student saw a concerning post on a friend's Instagram feed and reported it to our anonymous reporting system manned at our crisis center down in Miami," Hockley said. The posts included images of firearms, ammunition, and a mapped-out plan for attacking the school. The district told ABC7 News, it was Menlo-Atherton High School. Law enforcement later detained the student and recovered weapons from their home.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District will close for most of next week after the district detected ransomware in its servers, according to district officials. The district will close from Sept. 15-18 and will exchange the dates it is closed with other previously scheduled non-working days integrated into the current UCISD calendar. The ransomware detected by the district is affecting several essential online systems, including phones, thermostats, camera monitoring and visitor management systems, among critical services, the district said.
The superintendent of Wachusett Regional School District confirmed a teacher was placed on administrative leave after allegedly "making inappropriate comments" on her personal social media page. "Please know that Wachusett Regional School District condemns violence in all forms. Political violence, especially, has no place in our country, and it directly contradicts our nation's founding principles," Superintendent James Reilly said in a statement, which did not name the teacher.
Menlo-Atherton High School was put on lockdown this afternoon (Sept. 10) due to a threat to the school and a former student was arrested, Atherton police said. Someone called the police's tip line to let them know that a former M-A student had posted "concerning content" online about the school, according to a notice sent out by police. Police advised the school to lock down out of an abundance of caution.
It's part of a demonstration outside the National School Safety Conference. "We use drones to stop school shootings," says Justin Marston, the CEO of Campus Guardian Angel, the company selling the drones. In the event of a shooting, remote pilots fly the drones, housed at the school, at the shooter. They shoot pepper balls and run the drones into the shooter to debilitate them.
M. holds a strand of her hair up. "Look", she says laughing, pointing at white streaks she says weren't there before this summer. It's been stressful, she says, holed up indoors with the kids. As she speaks, her youngest climbs on top of the washing machine and proceeds to throw about a hundred plastic Easter eggs on the floor; unbeknownst to her, the baby she's rocking is wildly waving a large bottle of glue.
Teachers no longer get daily briefings of interactions between police and young people, either as victims or perpetrators, as well as them having witnessed domestic violence. Ms West grew gasps after telling how she sent two welfare staff to a teenage truant's home unaware he'd he been charged and released on bail over a blade-wielding attempted murder. Scotland Yard is being forced into substantial tough choices amid a 260 million budget shortfall.
Schools across the nation are grappling with a new, unexpected distraction - something students bring daily, one that seems innocent yet creates some notable disruption. It's the kind of item that quietly rattles a lesson plan's rhythm, rings a muted alarm in the halls, and forces educators to rethink what's acceptable in class. The culprit? The once- trendy reusable water vessel: the Stanley water bottle.
Weaponized drones are being tested inside US schools, flying through hallways with the ability to neutralize active shooters in seconds. Equipped with non-lethal pepper spray, powder pellets, and live video feeds, the drones launch from secure charging stations, six per school, when gunfire is detected. Developed by Campus Guardian Angel, the system has already completed trials in Texas and was recently demonstrated in three Florida schools. Permanent installations are scheduled this fall, with full deployment expected by January.
SFUSD is a sanctuary district, in a sanctuary city, that is within a sanctuary state. We are working very closely with our city leaders... to make sure our students, our families and our educators are safe.
"Her mom just came in and started beating me with the cup. I took my head because I saw blood dripping. I took my head and I saw blood all over my hands."
